Help! credit left on PAYG meter in new flat

Options
Hi,

First of all I'd like to say thanks for taking the time to read my post.

I have just moved into a new property and there is a fairly large amount of money left on the gas card meter. I am given to understand that that money should have been refunded to the previous tenant but it hasn't. The gas company want to come and reset the meter and wipe the credit but I was going to move supplier anyway. Do I have a legal obligation to let them reset it or am I free to move supplier and use the leftover credit? (I live in Scotland) I'd also like to move to a direct debit system if that makes nay difference. Without knowing how the credit is still on the meter I'm not sure what to do. I'm loathe to let them just wipe the money if it's already been paid for.

Thanks again

  • Yes, let them in. Its not your meter, your electricty and your money and they have a legal right to enter, if necessary with a warrant. That credit can be passed onto the legal owner. Let them in and start paying for the energy with your own money.

Do you have contact details for the old occupiers? I'm sure they will want their money back. The energy company will have to refund it, if they can find them. They don't just keep it :o
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
  • This is the weird thing. the previous tenant dropped round for her mail and said we could use her remaining credit (I hadn't seen the amount at the time or would have queried it with her)
  • also the amount was written and photographed on my inventory from the letting agent, so a little worried they may want to charge me for it
