I've occasionally had problems with Yumi in the past but not usually with using it to boot Slitaz. If it does not boot a particular distro try another similar one. Another good light linux distro is Slacko Puppy (one of the many varieties of Puppy Linux). Also try using a different brand name USB stick such as the ones from SanDisk or Kingston.
My favourite system for putting several live linux distros on a USB stick is Multisystem (not available for Windows)
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-multi-boot.html is a quick guide to both Yumi and Multisystem methods. There are others though available under Windows such as RMPrepUSB, UNetbootin, XBoot (no longer actively supported), Sardu.

Did you follow the instructions fully, making sure that the USB was formatted as a bootable drive?

I have had success previously using UNetbootin. (I installed Mint using an SD card as the boot drive, and this card was formatted etc. using UNetbootin).
