Re-direction of post

Myself and the OH bought our first property from family friends in June and we're loving it so far.

The people we bought the house off have assured us they have redirected all of their post, but we're getting 30-40 pieces a week. I know, with the type of post it is, they haven't changed address on their insurance and car tax amongst many things. (I know this could have implications on validity of insurance etc).

I have been writing "return to sender" on the post and putting it back in the post box, but they keep coming! I think the previous occupiers expect us to be their go between as they see us regularly. I've told them many a time. She came round last week asking if we'd had some post as she thinks its a tax reminder (obviously not changed address).

Is there anything else we can do? I am stood by the post office twice a week at the moment.

Have you told them about the redirection? I would inform them (nicely at first), that their redirection isn't working. Surely they must be getting the message when they come over for the post?

I would do as you have done - "addressee unknown" or similar, but seeing as it has now been 6 months I think i would be putting things straight in the bin/recycling. I don;t think that this would be unreasonable.

But then won't it start coming? I know they are probably too stingy to pay the £25 or whatever it is to redirect.

Can I legally write on, "owner now lives at x, please send all post here?"

Just put it all in the recycling bin.

That is the least time and effort solution. Twenty seconds a day unless you have junk mail yourself in which case it is zero extra time.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
  • Yeah for about 3 months I was writing return to sender and popping it all in the post.

But then I decided I had more than done my bit. Treat it the same as any other junk mail. Pop it straight in the recycling bin and forget about it.

In that situation I've written 'return to sender - not at this address' and after six months it has usually calmed down.

The citizens advice page says that you can write a forwarding address and the person it is forwarded to might have to pay an extra fee. That seems like quite a good way to encourage them to update their details!

Cross out your address, write new address on envelope, pop into a post box at your convenience.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Similar here - was willing to give previous owners a bit of leeway and took mail round to them as it was round the corner for about 12 months. Did it in chunks though when there was a big pile - did not discriminate between obvious mail and junk mail - they got the lot.

My thinking was that in 12/14 months they were probably going to receive mail and reminders from everyone that they were likely to. Moving house can be a bit stressful and they might have forgotten that odd account, membership renewal or some other annual statement etc

When we moved in last year we had post for the previous owners for a while, for the first 3 months i returned everything to sender, and after that everything whether important looking or not went in the shredder. It slowly tapered off until we got none. Dont know if they redirected or not, but my thought was i had been as helpful as I could and after that not my problem.
If they do come round again, as you have been fair and asked them to redirect many times, tell them you don't have any of their post/no post came, or be brutal and say everything that came i shredded. This may give them the rather large hint that if they want any of their post again then they need to redirect/change the addresses on everything/both.
