Council tax - forgot to change it...

Erm...oops.

I moved into my boyfriends house and genuinely, genuinely forgot to sort out the council tax. I started to and I have the email (January) saying all I have to do is reply with details to that email but I honestly forgot to reply. I will backpay whatever I owe but I am scared now to reply to that email. Will I be prosecuted??? I'm bricking it. Boyf says to put I moved in yesterday but what if they smell a rat?

And before anyone asks HOW I forgot to do it I had just moved, had a job from hell, crazy shifts, applying for new jobs, so much debt etc etc. As I don't pay the bill or even SEE the bill I just forgot.

It'll be fine, there'll be no prosecution - you'll have to back pay but there shouldn't be any real issues. Don't lie about the dates as it'll simply cause problems.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • How can I find out what the back pay will be? I think my boyfriend might murder me before I pay it! Should I reply to the email I have? Or fill in a new form?

Seems low (is that with the 25% discount off) ?

  • Maybe I have got it wrong, I looked up the address and the tax band and then what that equals in the area? This: http://www.wakefield.gov.uk/Documents/benefits-council-tax/council-tax/council-tax-charges.pdf

It looks right - you're council tax is low compared to most areas.

A 25% discount will work out at around £18.50 per month so multiply that by how long you've been there and that should give you a reasonable figure.
