Hi guys,
I'm moving house and have a really old iMac which I've decided to sell. I started to clean the hard drive and it froze when I tried deleting Skype. I had to force a shut down, and now every time I turn it on, on the gray screen the symbol starts off as a circle with a diagonal line through it, then it flashes really quickly between that, a question mark and the apple symbol.
If anyone can help me with this, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks

Thank you!
I think I've managed to wipe the operating system off - d'oh! And I don't have the intall ddisc anymore so I shall have to send an email off to the people buying it to explain why my computer is no longer 'in excellent condition'.

My DS has been given an iMac last week but the operating system was missing. I contacted Apple Live Chat and they talked me through the steps to restore it. I was very impressed.

The OP states "a really old iMac" so it won't have a Recovery Partition.
It would be handy to know exactly WHICH iMac model and WHICH Operating System, however. I don't see how anyone can give a useful answer without that basic information.
I think the best you can do, if time is short, is to order the appropriate installer disc via eBay (or wherever) and arrange to get it sent to the buyer.
Actually, these guys might be able to help: https://www.lmug.org.uk0 -
Yes, which model is it?
I was going to suggest an internet recovery but really old will probably rule that out.
Which version of OS X was it running? One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
