Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card

Hi Folks,

In May 2013 I applied for the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card (https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/content/gold-card/) and I cancelled it before the year was up in May 2014, although it still appears on my login, but correctly identifies as cancelled.

I then applied for the American Express British Airways Credit Card (https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/content/ba-credit-card/) which I still hold, and use.

As it has been six months since I closed my Gold Card account I am wondering if I can register as a new customer and benefit from the 1 year fee free, plus the welcome bonus of 20,000 points when you spend £2,000.

The relevant extracts from the Ts&Cs:

"The first year fee waiver is only available to new American Express Charge Cardmembers. A customer is not considered a new Charge Cardmember if they hold or have held in the last 6 months another American Express Charge Card."
The BA card is a credit card not a charge card, so I take this to mean that this does not apply to me?
"All introductory offers...are not available if you currently hold or have held any other Membership Rewards enrolled American Express Cards in the past 6 months."
The BA card is not enrolled in Membership Rewards, the Avios are paid directly into my BA Executive Club account.
Does anyone else agree with my rationale that I should be able to re-apply for the card & benefit from the perks again? Has anyone had any success doing this?

Thanks in advance.

  • My understanding would be that you should be in the clear for both fee and MR points but maybe worth checking with them beforehand?

Remember of course that if you are referred by someone who currently has an MR card, and assuming you are eligible for the bonus, that you get an increased 22,000 points

    6 Months is correct : http://www.headforpoints.com/best-uk-avios-airline-hotel-credit-cards/
The bonus is only available to customers who have not held a Platinum, Gold or Green Amex charge card in the last six months. You are OK if you have a BA, SPG, Nectar or similar Amex. Note that this is a charge card and your balance must be cleared in full each month. £20,000 household income requirement.

Yes, I do it every 18 months and so does everyone I know who can afford this level of spending.
  • I have done this too but waiting around 11 months before taking it out again and have got the bonus points and no fee. Recently closed and will be doing the same next year
  • It all depends. I do mine every 6 months
