Printer not communicating

Hello all.
I have a dell printer v305, which has worked fine with my hp laptop (via a USB cable) until the other day. I tried to print off a pdf pile, and a message informed me that the printer was 'unable to communicate'.
I've tried switching everything off and then on again, I've also unplugged the USB cable, and then plugged it in again. The latest drivers also apear to be installed ok, along with updates from Microsoft.
Soo... do I need to buy a new usb cable? Or a new printer? Help would be much appreciated!
