    This. They don't actually think the account is being stolen, its just a way to get around the switching rules.

    How did Halifax know the wrong account could/would be switched? They aren't psychic

    They didn't, the OP's family member let them know when they were put through to the switching team. Then they applied the block.

    Ah right. So if some error occurs and you catch the error in time, you can ask the old bank not to process the switch. Probably the same as asking the new bank to stop the transfer.

    You can do either up to a certain date before the switching completion (date should be defined in your switch T&Cs).
