Audio suddenly disappeared. Help!

So I come back to the PC to find it has rebooted for some reason and find a nice big X in the system tray against the loudspeaker image.

'No audio output device is installed' is the blatant lie now peddled by the system.

Can anyone tell me how to get sound back, please? I'm running Vista Basic.

Device Manager and presuming the error message is correct check audio drivers .
Or just install the audio drivers for your sound .

Both fail then audio chip may be dead .
  • Thanks. Tried all kinds of things with the Device Manager, only to find that a further, simple system reboot did the trick!

Quite worrying, though. The first time this kind of thing has happened.
