Old CCJs, not chased. Should I contact them to pay?

I have two CCJs on my file. One dates from July 09, and is owed to CL Finance (c/o Howard Cohen Solicitors). The other dates from September 2010, and is owed to Egg (c/o Bryan Carter Solicitors).
I have no record of being pursued for these debts over the last 4/5 years, and am wondering whether I should keep schtumm to allow them to drop off my file, or whether I should fess up and payout to avoid any further action.
Interestingly, Bryan Carter have a zero balance for me, apparently the debt was transferred back to client (whom I now believe to be Barclaycard.)
Any thoughts/advice/ideas greatly welcomed!

Morally you should pay your debts, but you already know that. Can you afford to pay them?
Sorry but I don't know about CCJs dropping off your credit file

They will drop off your credit file 6years after the judgment date whether you pay now or not.

In terms of further action - have you paid anything since the judgements were made? If your creditors instruct bailiffs would you be in a position to repay in full? Or if the creditor(s) apply for an attachment of earnings (if you are employed) would that cause you any issues with work?

  • If you have been putting update details in to credit reference searches, there is an almost dead certainty you will now be getting contracted by someone chasing the debts.
They will have just become saleable.

Can't sell on a CCJ, not without the courts permission.
  • Thanks for all the answers so far. I'm happy to pay, morally I owe the money, but my main concern was that if I paid now, they would stay on my file for another 6 years. However I think that I may well have been paying them - I have a number of monthly payments to DRAs set up, I'm just not sure if these are included or not - basically, I've paid everything I've been chased for. I'll contact them tomorrow to clarify unless anyone thinks otherwise?

Defaults drop off after 6 years, CCJs drop off after 6 years. Regardless of what you do now, they're gone in 6 years.

The only exception would be not paying a CCJ where they could, possibly, go back to court and get it renewed.

But it's the repayment he's worried about. If he repays the whole debt in one lump sum, would it show up on his credit report as a very late payment/settlement and stay on for another 6 years?

No. For a credit agreement the whole record of the account drops off 6 years after a default date.
For a CCJ it shows for 6years and then drops off.
