If you put your number plate into eurocarparts.com you should get a price for pads & discs. I normally use the Pagid. Watch that pads are sold in pairs and discs individually. Add £40 per wheel and that is what you should be paying roughly.
£40 per wheel is a bit extreme depends what labour rates it should take 1 or 1.5 hrs in extreme cases to do & it all depends what brands the garage use brakes like pagid are cheaper & just as good as ferodo which are very pricey.0 -
Bear in mind that quite a lot of independents will check this sort of thing for free as well - they just don't have the advertising budget to shout about it.
If you can see the pads and disks (depends on your wheels and the layout) then checking is as simple as looking at pad thickness, disk condition, and are they binding? That takes no more than 10 minutes on a ramp for all 4 wheels - Jack up, look, and spin the wheels, inspection done. If they can't see the disks / pads then they also have to take the wheel off which might add 5 minutes total.
If none of the above apply then a squeal will be caused by dust, dry pad backings (should have a very light smear of copperslip or similar on them) or something stuck, in which case you have a valid choice of pay to have te sorted or just put up with the squeal, which may go away on its own.0 -
£40 per wheel? I'd expect to pay £40 per axel in labour.0

"Free.....check" means we are using this expression as a bait to bring your car to us. Our parts and service charges will more than cover the time spent checking.0

No, not necessarily, there will still be friction material on the pads, it's just not going to last for that much longer.0
