Long open return flights

I work overseas for 10 months of the year (UK to NZ) and find it impossible to book the return part in advance. If I leave booking the out going part until I can book the return part i,e only a few weeks before hand, the price is sky high. As a teacher my dates are pretty fixed and pricy.

I explored getting a single and return flights over Christmas, but a return over Christmas is also super pricy.

Any ideas on making cheaper flight would be great.

Flights go on sale 355 days before travel, if you want to travel at peak times, they're not going to be on the cheap side.

355 in theory, but as in Jan 2014 I struggled to get a return Dec 2014.
I paid NZ$2800 (due to the closeness of my departure) and a further NZ$900 to move my flight. Total £1850. Compaed to my first return ticket of £800 when was able to book out going and return in advance, because it was only 7 months.

This time I book earlier, only £800, but maybe £500 more to move.

Explore different airlines... In my experience, Emirates and Cathay Pacific allowed change of return date at minimal or zero cost.

Have you booked the Jan 2015 journey? If not, what is the route you want to fly ?

  • Booking a fully flex return won't be cheap to start with, but does mean you should be able to change in only paying fare difference. Just change the return date as soon as the flights you want back are released.
