New Laptop Help Please

The last laptop I bought was a refurb MSi CR160 as a result of advice on the sub £350 laptop thread.
I think that was about 4 years ago.
It has started giving me a black screen, sometimes it works ok, but I think it's time I replaced it.
I'm currently using my old desktop to try and find a replacement. I've read recent threads here but found no conclusion.
I've looked at Argos outlet on eBay with no real clue what I'm looking at/for.
Can someone suggest what I should be looking at? The MSi CR610 does eveything I need (when it works) so not looking for bells & whistles... don't mind refurbs.
Thanks!

Have you read Maureen43's thread a few posts below this one? She's also asking for guidance on which laptop to buy. There have been a few suggestions already made.0
-
Yes, I have, thanks.
But it seems more of a discussion about Mac vs PC and I know that I don't want a Mac.
I had also looked at a variety of Lenovos but I've never heard of it before. The one she has posted is out of my price range.
The only suggestion I see is Dell Inspiron.0 -
Is there anything written on the black screen?0

No, it's just as if the machine is off - not a flicker.
Like, the lights are on but no-one's home - the little blue light comes on at the front but not the green one.
Taking battery out and popping it back in sometimes helps.
I'm looking at and Acer Aspire on Amazon

or some Toshiba's at Argos Outlet on eBay0 -

To which functions do the lights correspond?
The Toshiba has a better spec. Though none of them are spectacular.0 -
i got a lenovo from agros outlet a couple of weeks ago £149 windows 8 15.6 screen very impressed, have used a lenovo thinkpad for work for years

Further research, not a lot apparently. The blue one with a blank screen just means it's in sleep mode, the green is the wi-fi.
Apparently it's a common problem with machine getting stuck in hibernation?
Or, another suggestion is that graphics card is fizzled.
Don't think it's the latter as it works off and on. I can't do with uncertainty though.
I don't need spectacular, just usable to the same level as the one I have
Thanks!0 -
