Radiator at top of stairs?

Should you put a radiator on the upstairs landing?

Normal straight stairs with bathroom straight ahead then turn at the top landing to enter bedrooms.

We've got one at the bottom of the stairs but not at the top. The house was built in 1997.

I've got one in the downstairs hallway, I don't have it on. No point heating a hallway....
  • Have one if you want one
  • You could, but if you have one at the bottom of the stairs the heat will rise anyway.

I think the only point of one upstairs would be if you had upstairs and downstairs on different heating zones, so the downstairs rad would be off overnight, which could leave the landing a bit cold.

Even if this was the case, the bedrooms and bathroom would be at a desired temperature so the time spent crossing a cooler landing area would be minimal.

Our radiator is downstairs and you can feel the heat rising.

I got one , does a good job of keeping the landing area warm and is an extra radiator to dry towels from the bathroom on

With a window on the landing slightly open to reduce condensation on the windows !
  • Due to ongoing renovations, we don't yet have radiators either in the hall or on the landing. It's definitely cold between rooms. Eventually there will be a radiator in both areas - but our landing is big (I will be making it into a sitting area with a couple of armchairs and a bookcase).

If you can afford it, and there's room, go for it - you don't have to use it if you don't need it, but it's there if you do.

    I won't.
How long would you going to stay at the landing? 30 seconds?

I guess it depends on the size of your house and hallway. I haven't got one in my upstairs hallway (3 bed semi) but my parents have a 4 bed detached with a large landing which does have one.
