Configure Gmail with Windows Mail

After a torrid time last week with TalkTalk not working I am moving to Gmail.
I have set up my Gmail account within Windows mail and all seems to be working. I have configured using IMAP rather than the POP that TalkTalk used.
When I download a mail to the Windows Mail client it seems to be retained on the GMail server. I would like to retain it on the client but have it automatically deleted from the Gmail server.
Could someone advise what I need to change to do this.... many thanks.

With IMAP mail is kept on the server. This is how it is designed to work. This means you can check your email from several devices and see the mail.
You cannot connect to GMail any other way. Why do you want to change it? The benefits of it are being able to access all you mail from other computers/devices.0 -
You can connect to Gmail with POP - I do it now with MS Outlook. It downloads emails to my local PST file, then archives them on Gmail (so they disappear from my Gmail Inbox, but are still there in the All Mail folder - see first link below).

(If the latter link results in a collapsed page, click on I want to enable POP, then on Windows Mail).0
