OK, was actually a while back a bit longer than I thought:
Car Mechanics November 2013, page 21, Tips from the Trade:
"BMW M5
Out-of -date coil pack
The owner of this 1999 BMW M5 V8 had detected a minor misfire. The problem was only slight, but not wanting to let the Beemer get any worse, he brought the car to us for a quick look. We found that, when driving under normal conditions, the engine seemed to run smoothly enough. However once under a little bit of load, the misfire could be detected.
Reading off the fault codes, our scanner informed us that the coil packs on number one bank were all breaking down. The scanner also told us that, because of the date displayed on the coil packs, they all should be changed. The owner decided to bite the bullet and get all eight replaced while the motor was in the workshop. Eight coil packs were ordered and fitted, and a test run confirmed that the V8 was now running smoothly."0 -
thanks for the replies... anybody got idea how much it would cost to replace one0

Some people seem to be talking about four being faulty?
The O/P said THREE.0 -

They're not a fortune to buy. I've had various sets replaced and i generally pick a big brand like BOSCH or NGK or something like that off ebay. They generally come with a two year warranty.
Check your local motor factors too for price.
Cant remember if its a big job fitting them, but get all four done while they're at it. Dont think they're too hard to get at.0 -

That's not quite the same as having them "set to expire" though, is it? It just means that they have a date associated with them (as will everything on there) and the diagnostic software is aware that once one fails after a certain age (ie: not an earlier than expected failure) the chances are the others are close because they've all had a similar life.
Which is like suggesting you replace all your spark plugs when one starts misfiring at, say, 25k miles rather than just the one that's playing up - which any experienced mechanic would do The only difference is that it's the computer suggesting it rather than the mechanic himself.0 -

Just done them on our 525 and, at least on the 6 cyl, it was a case of inlet manifold off to get good access. Could have done them without but it was only about 45 minutes total and much easier with the pipework out the way! Plugs were £25 for a set of 6 Beru off Ebay. Only had failed but it was definitely a case of may as well do them all while in there.
Haven't looked at the M47 "in the flesh" but it looks like a pretty similar layout.0
