It was "Your PPI Expert" they're based in Glasgow. I think they mainly deal with Scottish clients.

Doesn't sound like any "Law Firm"
  • It is Ipsos Consulting LLP. Although it is in Scotland, it has to be regulated by the Claims Regulator to provide claims management services to consumers resident in England or Wales.

Where do you live, lowie? (We only need to know the country).

Possible the LLP status of the firm, or the wording they used implied they were to the original poster

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

    I'm in Scotland.

As I've already stated they employ a third party law firm.

I've sent off a complaint, I'm not holding out much hope of a refund though.

What is the name of the 3rd party law firm - could be one of those in-house jobs where they pretend to have a law firm but it's just the same firm! Could also be that PPI firm are just a call centre operation who pass on leads to an actual firm to do the reclaim.

Regardless, PPI is a civil issue not a legal one, there was no crime committed in selling PPI so it's not the sort of case a normal law firm would have taken on, it sounds more like they have worded their letter to make it sound serious to "encourage" you to pay up.

Unfortunately based on the Ts & Cs linked below (especially 5.1 and 6.2/6.5) they do inform you that you will still have to pay them even if you get no money back so expect a rejection from the firm.

I would then send the complaint onto the FOS once (if?) the PPI firm reject your complaint. They may be more friendly as there is no immediate mention in the Ts & Cs about bankruptcy and not taking on cases where the claimant will not see the money.

That is unfortunate. In England and Wales we have a rather toothless watchdog but at least it can try to lick scumbags like this to death.

I suggest you take it up with your MSP as you are paying the price of devolution.

It's been that way for as long as I can remember not just since the Scottish parliament was set up which is how you make it sound. Whatever you meant the Scottish government would rather whine about random nonsense than get off their asses and set up decent regulation where it's not covered by UK (or is it just GB) wide law. This is a country that thought it could self govern?? At least we're covered by the FOS that's something.

The law firm are called Nelson, Gibb and Landa. They are very much a legit company in that they have a flashy website (ngllaw.net). I don't know if they require regulation numbers etc.

I was never actually billed. They asked for my debit card details a few months ago and charged it without me knowing.

Would the FOS even help in a matter like this, I would think it was something outside their scope? I will keep on at the company until I get a reply. Weekly emails if need be.

Nasaqueron is in error suggesting you refer your complaint to FOS, the Financial Ombudsman has no jurisdiction over Claim Companies.
