Really? I guess I've been lucky then - every single policy I've ever had has covered me for that. The two times I've lost something (with two different insurers) both paid out without any hassle at all. A third claim is just being submitted now and when I went through it on the phone it didn't seem like they'd be an issue.
My mistake, I thought that would be included as standard. As above, I guess I've just been lucky!

If you've made three claims on travel insurance I'd say you are not lucky but very unlucky (or possibly absent-minded or careless, which are still unlucky).

I suppose it depends how often you travel.

My 1-2 trips a year have led to a nil claim in lifetime. So far.

But the more you travel the more chance something will go wrong.

    1. agreed
    2. same for me
    3. although I'd psotulate the more you travel the more you develop the habit of being organised, looking after stuff, keeping your wits about you, that type of thing.

I'd suggest you definitely give it a try. Call the insurance company and see what they say, explaining you got home before you realised it was missing. Maybe they'll suggest you call the police or something.

I once left a pair of glasses on a table in a restaurant abroad and realised when I got home. I was able to claim no problem.

Perhaps I'm more absent-minded or careless than I should be, but I wouldn't say unlucky. Those 3 claims come from a total time abroad of around 3 years - I'm not sure that's any higher than the average claim rate (for the typical person who goes away once a year for a fortnight, that would be the equivalent of one claim every 24 years).

I personally don't feel I "have my wits about me" any more now than before I'd started travelling abroad. I don't think "don't leave your phone on top of the payphone" is something that you need to develop as a skill as such - and certainly isn't something unique about being abroad, the same applies in the UK!

I know you're not personally attacking me, but I don't think 3 lapses in judgement over a 3 year period is overly bad! And I'd say 2 of them were justifiable (the 3rd was just me dropping my walkman on the way to the airport). The first was on my first ever solo trip abroad to Australia at 18, where I landed at 11pm stressed out because my transfers didn't show up and I didn't know where I was going - I found a payphone to call them but left my mobile phone on top of it. The other was when I was woken up at 3am with two dozen bed bug bites. It took me hours to get back to sleep while the staff washed the "infected" clothes which made me sleep through my alarm and almost miss my flight. I grabbed the clean clothes from reception without getting a chance to pack them away, then had to sprint through the airport (I arrived at the airport door 15 minutes before take off) and negotiate security with what would have been my checked luggage (therefore containing numerous liquids that set off a load of secondary screening), accidently leaving behind the carrier bag of clothes which they presumably put aside while searching my suitcase.

I guess the short version of this is that I don't think my claim rate or reasons for claiming are too awful! Particularly taking account my "style" of travelling - constantly city/country hopping.
