I have had on and off a message coming up saying CPU usage I have clicked on this but I am not sure what this means It is saying may be due to other programmes running or some sort of malware I have run my security all seems well I did have a problem with with jerky scrolling and running slowly I downloaded a malware as advised on here and that did slow a few things which were removed The scrolling up seems to be fine for most of the time This am when I started my laptop I got a different message on the screen saying Windows Registry needs updating I did nothing as it was just like a pop up so didn't want to risk clicking on it Would appreciate advice as I am terrified that I might get some sort of virus

Hi
http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/11299.aspx
You get a list of what is running, quite a long list probably, with weird names.
Some will be vital and others optional.
##########################
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Microsoft_Windows_components#Services
System idle process SIP A counter which measures how much idle capacity the CPU has at any given time. The process runs in the background and monitors processing bandwidth, occupied memory and the Windows virtual paging file. Session Manager Subsystem SMSS Performs several critical boot-time operations, such as the creation of environment variables, starting CSRSS, and performing file-copy operations that were queued up from before the system was booted (pending file rename operations). During system operation, it handles Windows File Protection and the creation of logon sessions via Winlogon. Client/Server Runtime Subsystem CSRSS User-mode side of the Win32 subsystem. Provides the capability for applications to use the Windows API. Local Security Authority Subsystem Service LSASS Responsible for enforcing the security policy on the system. Verifies users logging on to the computer and creates security tokens.
###################################
Unfortunately some malware will assume the ID of a legitimate service/process and therefore make its detection/removal difficult.
So you have a lengthy and complicated search for what things actually are, and what is the minimum.

Hi
My particular XP system runs quite light, yes I do have 2 Anti-Virus applications installed and I am using 1.15 Gig of memory. With about 2 - 8 % CPU usage. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The CPU activity thing is probably malware/scamware, it's a pointless popup which windows would never display itself, because clicking on it not going to miraculously bring down CPU usage. I would estimate that the slowness is linked to the popup, probably an attempt to extort money from you to fix it.
Malwarebytes is a good place to start (if the malware isn't blocking the website), do not download this from anywhere but the genuine site. If you have to install software by downloading it on another PC and transferring via USB stick then make sure you hold down shift when inserting the drive, to stop autorun spreading infections to other devices.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

OS=operating system, like XP, vista, windows7 or 8, what makes your computer run.
It does sound like malware, so run malwarebytes, jrt and adwcleaner.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Sorry it is Windows 7 Thanks going to run the ADWCLEANER and see how it goes
Thanks again Sue0 -
I ran this and it told me to check anything I didn't want removed Nothing at all was showing so I clicked CLEAN when it finished it closed down but when I opened it again what I had was notepad with lots of writing on sort of script Nothing else happened so not sure whether I have completed the clean system or if there should be anything I needed to do Fell pretty stupid but not really savvy about these things
Sue When this pop up appears it says Norton and high usage0 -
Presumably your antivirus is Norton 360 / Internet Security, if it is a yellow border pop up that pops up about high cpu then no real need to worry , it can be a bit trigger happy, but it should tell you what is using the high usage4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0
