What budget and mileage are you looking at?

20k a year on a 9 year old car.. You need to choose wisely otherwise there is a risk that it will be in the workshop more than you have it.

  • Budget is £3000, car has 85000 miles with full service history though not all volvo. Trade seller
  • S60 and S80's are a real mile muncher.

D5's can get close to 60mpg on a run and late 30's around the houses, which is good for 180bhp 2.4...

    I really like them.

    Downsides: AWFUL turning circle.
  • No way can S60 D5s get 60 miles to the gallon. You'll struggle to get 45 on a long run. I averaged 40, mostly motorway miles. The dash mpg computer is optimistic so I wouldn't buy one if you're hoping for fantastic fuel economy. They are very comfy cars and nice to drive- however it was reasonably expensive to run. Oil expensive thus servicing pricey, parts expensive, difficult to DIY compared to other cars, the clutch was slipping and I sold it as I didn't fancy a bill of over a grand to replace the DMF, insurance isn't what I'd call cheap.

Yours must have been a lemon then. when we had them we could get late 30's around the houses easily.

How can oil be expensive? Oil is oil.

    DMF can go on anycar.

Wasn't a lemon by any stretch. Just no way you can get 60 to the gallon and I'm not suggesting you can't get late 30's round the houses. Plus oil is expensive for the spec that the D5 needs- I have no idea what you mean by oil being oil. It varies drastically in price dependent on spec

Oil is oil - it sounds like someone took you for a ride by saying your car needed expensive oil.

If we can late 30's around the houses, then why were you averaging 40 on the motorway? Were you in 3rd gear or doing 100mph?

Maybe it was your clipping clutch or maybe your oil was wrong...

When you paid for the oil was it charged in 1/2 litre bottles?

5-30 oil? Under £30 for 5 litres of a decent brand. Lookout for offers and you can get it cheaper.

Clutch slipping. They do that when worn. Not many cars these days without a DMF. So fairly normal. The DMF itself is only £400.

Castrol longtec was recommended when I had one. You can put whatever oil in it you like I suppose. DMF may be £400 but labour, changing clutch etc etc. Over a grand easy and you may as well do it all in one go. At the age the OP is looking to buy, this is something to keep an eye on. Anyway, my main point was, they aren't that cheap to run and no way in a million years will you get 60mpg out of one.
