help with switching from virgin to freeview

Hi excuse the fact that I'm completely clueless but we currently have a virgin package for X tv bb and line rental. We're giving notice as with the increase we'll be paying close to £60 pm which is ridiculous.

We're looking to find a good deal for line rental and bb and then getting a box for freeview. Ideally we'd like to be able to record and it be HD but not essential.

I don't know where to start :/ would we be better off getting a smart freeview tv? Do we need an aerial ( as far as I can see there's only virgin or sky leads in the front room)
thanks!

Have a read here to familarise yourself with your options for Free TV.

Edit: When call Virgin to cancel your contract, tell them its too expensive and they should offer you a decent retention deal.

For Freeview you will need an aerial and for Freesat a dish.

I would go for a PVR that includes catchup, rather than a smart tv (though most new sets are now smart), as, apparently, when your smart tv becomes old technology you lose services because the manufacturer no longer supports them on older sets.

No, what happens is that manufacturers don't provide software updates for older sets and so some functionality is lost. No "services" are lost.

So, if for instance , the problem was with iPlayer, you would still be able use it to watch missed BBC programmes, but may lose the option to access other material ?

The BBC is probably the last thing you would lose access to….
