Long term unemployed - Is there any hope?
Comments
-
As an employer I would be reluctant to take someone on who has been off on long term sick. Employers have a LOT of rights now which mean if an employer was to take you on, they are taking on a bigger risk than normal that you will do 6 months or 2 years and then go off on the sick again.
Just to be clear, I am not saying its bad or wrong that employers have so many rights, im just saying that it is probably not helping you.
.i wish you look, but i for one as an employer won't empoly anyone whos been unemployed for a long period. i've tried it twice and been bitten both times.
you need to build up some experience in the voluntary sector to help update your skill set.
sorry not to be more positive.
good luck
Oh, so there's a chance I'll just be unemployed for ever?!
Yes I am currently volunteering thanks guys0 -
Small chance but very unlikely. You can get over gaps by using volunteer work as a reference.Topcat1982 wrote: »Oh, so there's a chance I'll just be unemployed for ever?!

Whilst your employment history might scare employers off you can always become self employed finding your own clients.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Its difficult to suggest ideas without knowing more about you but have you thoughts about:
- Apprenticeships
- Asking friends/family (Im looking for another broker and have asked friends/family/people I know within the industry if they know anyone)
- Finding ANY job, if you start at the bottom and are any good it wont take long before employers recognise it. I used to work in a pub and was offered a managers job at some blokes bar in town because he could see I was working hard at the pub.
- Are you on linkedin?
- Does the charity have any paid positions going?I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Depends on your attitude, yours seems solid so I would say there is no chance you will remain unemployed. It might not be easy but you will be able to get a job.Topcat1982 wrote: »Oh, so there's a chance I'll just be unemployed for ever?!

Some employers will give you a chance so you need to play the number games, the more you apply for the better your chance.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
A professional grifter would do you in good stead. You need to be smart, verrrry smart.0

I recently had an interview with Asda, I didn't take the job in the end, but I was impressed how diverse the group of us they offered jobs to were, they weren't ageist, we all had varied backgrounds and quite a few had been long term unemployed, some through I'll health. It just seemed they gave people a chance and looked at where they were now rather than their past.
Just a thought for you, good luck anyway, hope you get something soon

I thought i would be unemployed forever too, now I have been in work for nearly 4 months0

How long is the gap?
I left the NHS after 14 years due to ill health. I had the best part of two years on the sick before I finally jacked. I then took another year to get straight before I started to look for work. I've never been unemployed since
So I never got back into administration, but hell I've enjoyed working since
Look at different types of work, look at part time, look at a junior post in something you have an idea you may like
The only unemployable people are those that pigeon hole themselves and refuse to look " outside the box"0 -
