Remote controlled car for boy, which is the best one.

I have a ten year old who's into racing. I'd like to get him a radio controlled car, have looked in Smyths. I am looking for something that runs on rechargeable battery pack.

Can you recommend a model please suitable for a kiddie of ten soon to be eleven?

Thanks.

This one, without a doubt. It must be the best - just look at the price!

What will your son want to do with the rc car? drive it round kitchen, house etc, drive around garden park progress to racing or start to race with it in clubs?
If its the 1st then Smyhts would do, but if other 2 options find a local model shop an example of 1 http://www.formbymodelshop.com/ used to take my younger brother there years ago and someone i know used the shop a few years ago.
  • You could go for something like this.. it goes on snow, water, dirty...

Probably drive it round the garden and inside. Where is this shop please, or are they only online?

I had a look at the one on Amazon and this notice came up which was a bit worrying. EEK!

    Item Under Review

This product is not currently offered by Amazon.co.uk because a customer recently told us that the item he or she received was not as described.

We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you may still find this product available from other sellers on this page.

    Will still keep looking :)

One that is self built is always the best way to go, young lads have a tendency to smash up the cheap RC cars that come "ready to race".

So where they might cost you £30, the self build cars start at arund £100 and should hopefully be more respected by the time it's been built.

Depends really on whether he's of a technical mind and patient enough to sit and build one (I was even at 10).

I'd go for any £20-£30 sacrificial "toy" with a bit of suspension and off road ability, then if he gets into it he may wish to progress to a proper self build "model".

I did this and got my first proper model at 12. Plus I was more used to controlling them (which is useful as the models are faster, larger, heavier and more expensive!) :-)

I still have mine up in the loft somewhere (I'm 40 now) :D

    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

I've got a Tamiya Scorcher (circa 1980). This was my first RC car, it's also up in the loft somewhere!!
Bloody solid thing, with an alloy chassis and supposedly fully waterproof.
I'd say they don't make em like they used to, but they recently re-released this little beast with a £300 price tag!

A lot of these models come with batteries that drain rather quickly, so buying more batteries adds to the cost.
