ADSL / Router Setup - Some Guidance Pls..

Hi

Was hoping some techie people may be able to help / advise...

Problem: I'm having to re-boot my current router (Netgear DG834PN) quite often now as the wifi often ceases to function. Hardwired connections continue ok.

I've checked and I have the latest firmware (no further updates for this oldish model)

Option: I was thinking of replacing it (as wifi is fine after a re-boot) but a lot of the newer better performing routers are not ADSL modems (only routers).

I've also gotan old Netgear DG834 v2 ADSL modem. So was wondering about either setting up the DG834 or the DG834PN in modem mode and taking advantage of this offer.

ADSL Connection.... Due to distance from exchange, lack of FTC where I live i get about 5Mbs speed so outright speed from the ADSL line is not such a concern (atm).

Thoughts: So, any thoughts on my suggestion and if it would make any real (noticeable) difference should I use the DG834 or DG834PN routers as the ADSL modem?

Any other thoughts / suggestions?

TIA

You are having problems with WiFi on your DG834PN which may be simply due to the way that you have configured the WiFi connection.

As you also have a DG834 v2 router, the obvious thing that you should try first, is using that to eliminate the DG834PN before even thinking of buying a new router.

It is rather a silly idea to make use of any router as the ADSL modem and then connecting a new router to it.

Just need to clear something up.
What are you doing then the wifi goes down?

I've noticed when I transfer multi Gb files between my Wired Media PC and my Wireless Games machine, every so often the Games machine's wifi looses connection and I have to reboot the PC to get it back

This only happens when transferring large files. Think it's to do with the time-out settings of the wifi (It's constantly sending so much data the router can't send out the usual "hey I'm here" packets to other machines, so they think the wifi is down including the one receiving the data).

It looks like that is a G only router despite the N in the name so if you do make a lot of use of wireless it probably is time to bin it - certainly if the problem is caused by you attempting fairly large file transfers over wireless.

There are absolutely hundreds of ADSL2+ modem routers still on sale including quite high performance ones from the likes of ASUS. They are often just called routers rather than modem/routers but checking the specs will clarify that.

Here's a slightly lower spec and price ASUS modem router on Amazon

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-DSL-N55U-Wireless-Streaming-Warranty/dp/B007QTMCHC

One with a similar spec to the plain router you linked to but witha VDSL/ADSL2+ modem and a higher price tag

    http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/17189-asus-dsl-n66u/

I haven't looked for lowest prices.

Hi... Not sure if I wasn't clear of you have misunderstood.

My current set up only uses the DG834PN router. This replaced the previous DG834 (no wifi).

Hi... The wifi performance / usability degrades over time until it becomes unusable.

There isn't any large file transfers that go on using wifi.

Re-booting the router brings wifi back to life and back to its previous speeds etc.

    Hi guys (or gals)

    Thanks for your reply's.

I'm don't have a particular desire to go for the set up I mentioned it was just that I have a spare router which could act as a simple modem and buying a cable router might provide some flexibility depending on if other broadband options become available (cable etc).

kwikbreaks, thanks for the links, I'll have a look at prices etc.
