rusty heated chrome towel rail

My towel rail is only 18months old but we live in quite a damp house anyway (plus I'm a bit stingy with the heating!!)

The rails now have some little rust spots on them and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to stop them getting worse.

I have in mind sanding down the spots with the finest sandpaper I can find (like wet wetanddry) and then covering the spot with clear nail varnish.

Is this a crap idea?

Thanks all :)

Not sure about the nail varnish idea but you can get small jars of chrome paint in b & q, in the sort of crafty type section.

When I say I'm not sure about the nail varnish I mean I don't know if it'll work-not that I know it won't work, because I don't! If you see what I mean..... :0/
