First Time Buyer - Gas and Electric
My husband and I are due to complete on 19th December, and I'm just after a bit of advise on energy supply as we don't actually pay for it at the moment (living with parents).
Do I need to phone the energy companies before completion day and advise them we'll be moving into the property and ask to set up a direct debit, or do we do it on the day of completion when we've got the meter readings?
Thanks

Do you know who the existing supplier is at the property and is that whom you would like to be with?
You should take the opening meter readings from the date you assume liability for the bills (your completion date) and ask the current supplier to set you up an account. I would then advise you to assess your options, generally you will be put straight on to the flexible tariff which will be the dearest. At the moment a short term (1 year) fix is the best option with pretty much energy company, I'd suggest either asking the existing supplier to talk you through the options on this or doing some research and applying for the best deal. You wont be able to make this application until you assume ownership of the property so if you were to move supplier you will still have a 4-6 week period (generally, shorter with some companies) where you will be paying the existing supplier.0
