Process Modelling

Hi,

I'm trying to understand this concept for an upcoming exam but I was hoping to get a better perspective on it from some of the knowledgeable people on here.

My understanding of this concept is to review existing processing within a business to complete a task and document this fully and from here changes/improvements are recommended. Is this correct and if so are there particular models that are followed?

Just bumping this to see if I can get some information.
  • That's pretty much it. In my experience, process modelling is done for a combination of -

    1) A precursor to computerisation of (part of) the process
    2) Help identify why exceptions and faults are occurring
    3) Look for ways to simplify and reduce the end-to-end time to complete
    4) Simulate to model what the sustainable through-put is and where work is queuing
are there particular models that are followed?

Are there any type of tools used or methods followed?

A Business Analyst would look at a business process which has built up over generations of bodges and look at how to streamline it in terms of

What information is required, what desireable
    What's needed where and when
Who has to sign off on what
Who needs to see which information and how it's presented
How to enforce 'policy', but also spotting bottlenecks (Mr X needed to signoff a payment, but what if he goes on extended leave?)

You get the idea - it's rigour and making flowcharts so all cases are considered and systems simplified and harmonised.

Once analysed, you can use a tool like http://www.processmaker.com/ to formalise those processes and make sure the right data and signoffs are enforced in the right order. Processmaker or similar will manage the underlying data structures, and automagically send emails as required, send reports, etc.
