I'm at a loss as to what the Statute of Frauds has to do with this case.
But, in any case, you decided to drop out of the league, with no notice and without any real attempt to address your problems with them.
Their site repeatedly says that by signing up, you agree to play a whole season. You have chosen to cancel part way through, and I am not surprised that they are billing you for the remaining games. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
The £82 is broke up into £52 for none attendance / cancellation fee, and £30 for not giving 2 weeks notice period. The cancellation fee I have no idea where they got £52 from, their contract says you can cancel a game twice per season, and no fee's will be charged if you inform them 5 days or more before the game, which I did, so it's not like they didn't know we weren't going to play. Even if we were still liable, it's £15 per team so I thought the maximum we would have to pay would be £30 to cover our team and the opponents we were due to play.
As for the £30, I agree we owe them for not giving 2 weeks notice period, but their contract doesn't state an actual amount we should be charged for not giving 2 weeks notice.. so as to the cost of that I'm not sure what it should be.
The statute of frauds was just something I did some quick research on to see if his text message was legally binding in that he said we would play 40 minute games at a cost of £15 per game, as we ended up playing 30 minute games and have been overcharged £11. I'm in no way clued up on matters like this which is why I posted on here for help so sorry if that's completely the wrong thing. Also to note we joined part way through season after the other teams had already played 4 or 5 games. They also said we wouldn't be charged if replacement teams could be found - 3 new teams joined just as we left, but we are still being charged0 -
Just pay the £82. Divided between your team of I'm guessing 6-8 it's just over a tenner each.
Is it worth escalating where if you lose the final bill will be in excess of £4000 -

Just to let everyone know the issue has been resolved now. Spoke to the guy who sent me the letter today, turns out the £52 out of the £82 we were being charged for cancelling the match was to cover fees for both teams - at a rate of £26 per team when the contract we signed said £15 per team. I mentioned that to charge us that they would be breaking their contract, and after some discussion we agreed to play one match tonight for £15 and call it quits, and had him send me a text message to confirm it. We drew 0-0 but I guess that's better than an £82 fine! Thanks for your help everyone!0

I suggest you use the money you saved to invest in some forwards for the next league! One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0
