Why does my ID/passport not go through for Nationwide Credit Card

Ok so I have visited my local branch 2 times now, both times they said they have verified me faxed off my passport, but on the credit card application team they keep saying it's not showing on their system or it did not go through...When I ring te CC people they keep telling me to fax passport again in your local branch...Branch keep saying they've done all they could....So what seems to be the issue here? I asked them has it got to do with my surname being mispelt (different letter on credit card form then passport) they are adamant it has nothing to do with that, but just need to fax it off to them....

I don't get what I should do now, they said the card is ready to go if yu just send ID, which I've done few times now...

It seems likely your credit card is ready to go but with the wrong name on it; the passport name may not have been associated with the credit card application; you're dealing with two different departments who can't agree on the problem.

I'd say your best bet is probably to cancel the current application and start all over again with the correct name.

On your other thread you said they were rejecting your application because of electoral roll issues, presumably related to the misspelling. Sounds like it would be worth getting hold of your credit report in the first instance, to see how that looks, but realistically you're going to need to get the name issue sorted out properly once and for all rather than trying to perpetuate an anomaly even further.

But they were adamant it has nothing to do with the name now as they changed it in the branch...As long as the name is change in the branch then there is no issue, so they said.. Or do the credit card people have to have the name changed on their side too?

When they faxed the passport they mainly concentrate on reference number there, so does a reference number really expose difference in surname? how do they really verify ID through passport and not go through system because of tiny misspelling of surname considering age and address is the same

I don't understand how I got past the soft checks i.e. agreed in principle .. My address is verified though!

About the electoral roll, they mentioned it has not anyhing to do with either, because if I passed the soft checks then I must have been on the roll, and also by showing them a passport it means your on the roll anyway. I heard as long as the date of birth and address are verified and are same then 1 letter of a surname that is different to the passport one should not really be relevant.

If I cancel the application and re-do it would it dent my credit file?

I'd have thought that if you're applying for a credit card, the name used for a current account in branch is irrelevant.

Surely the purpose of an ID check is to check ID, i.e. that you are who you say you are! If the passport doesn't match the application, it would seem a pointless check if it was to pass with a different name. While you may consider the matter to be one of a 'tiny misspelling', I imagine the CC company will see it as a binary 'match or no match' issue.

Not sure how you conclude either of those to be honest, having a passport doesn't equate to being on the electoral roll!

Ultimately it's up to the CC company what is and isn't relevant, regardless of what you've heard anecdotally elsewhere!
  • Ok cheers for that.

If I cancel this application and re-apply would it take a dent on my record? considering my application isn't even live yet.

About the passport and electoral roll situation, the woman at the branch said to get a passport you have to be the electoroll anyway, espeacially a British one. So they perhaps looked past that.

My confusion is that the guys on the other side of the team i.e. credit folks claim the surname issue shouldn't have any bearing whether passport goes through their system or not...The address however went through.

a second search will show on your credit file.

you either misunderstood or were given wrong information. You do not have to be on the electoral roll to get a passport, and having a passport does not mean you are on the electoral roll.

The whole point about you being asked for your passport is so they can confirm your identity. If the names differ, the identity is not confirmed - or worse, your application might be considered as fraudulent and worst case you might end up with a CIFAS marker. You really need to decide by which name you want to be known, and use your real name with your financial transactions.
