Stollen thread

I have been to local Aldi, Asda, Sainsbury and Tesco. Only Tesco sold the good value Stollen loafs. All the others seem to have the un-economical slices or seem to be perpetually out of stock.

I imagine this is popular this time of year. The asda slices were actually tasty though with a decent dash of alcoholic spirit it seems.

  • The nicest Stollen I have bought recently was from the German Christmas Market in Leeds (made in Dusseldorf it said on the label) It didn't come cheap but was absolutely gorgeous. Alas this year I have had to resort to Aldi's Specially Selected Stollen and hope it's as nice!

    Me 3, it's great stuff.

Although after Christmas, it was knocked down to just 50p @ Aldi and perfectly acceptable ;)

  • Which of the Lidl stollens would you recommend?

Last time we nipped into our local branch there were 4 different varieties IIRC - 1 boxed and 3 in plastic wrappers.
  • We love Lidl Stollen bites.. . .
Only one problem now: too many people like them!
Very difficult to time it right & buy some here.
I feel a "bulk-buy" coming on next time I find them.
As for "which one" - may I politely suggest you read the ingredients?
BECAUSE we find that the "butter" ones taste SO much better than those made with "palm oil".

Morrison's have an offering too - though it's not that good. Not much fruit compared to 'proper' stolen, though quite cheap

I've got some Aldi Stollen bites in my cupboard that call my name each time I walk by, but am resisting for the moment!!!
I noticed yesterday that they also have some Stollen bites soaked in rum - anyone tried them? Can I be so naughty as to buy a pack of these too? They were £2.49 BTW.
  • Aldi stollen bites are very nice. I keep them in a lock and lock so that they don't go off, but they're so rich I couldn't eat more than 1 at a time.
