Problems with Seagate freeagent backup

I have the above mentioned hard drive. It's probably about 6 years old. It came loaded with software which used to automatically back up the data from my laptop incrementally when attached ( every few days ).
I haven't used it for over a year.
It now doesn't seem to work.
My laptop recognise the drive , I can copy and paste data to it etc , and a drive checking utility says that the drive is functioning normally.
However the freeagent management software doesn't run, doesn't show that there is a backup on the drive and wont try to make a backupwhen instructed to do so
I downloaded another version of the software from the Freeagent site but it wont install as it says that I already have a newer version installed. So basically the drive/ software doesn't work automatically in the manner I want it to. I think it's obsolete as the newer freeagent drives have more features
Is there anything I can do to get the software working properly again? It was very useful as it backed up settings and changes to the system etc and not just data files like photos, documents etc
Or is there some other similar incremental backup software I can put on the drive which will do the same job?
Thanks in advance
