isles of scilly

Anyone knows how not to spend £100 one way on a flight there as makes what otherwise would be a local weekend break for a family into an expensive venture.
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

    Is the boat still running?

    Would that be cheaper?

Went there a couple of times as a child and it's one of my favourite places.

Would love to go again but the cost puts me off!
Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
    And we were young.

The cheapest is by boat the Scillonian which does not run in winter, she starts again in March, otherwise you are stuck with air fares.

  • Scilly out of season is err - closed.
Many of the shops close for the winter and I'm afraid it isn't a cheap destination.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.
  • Sign up to get their offer emails - they've recently had buy one get one half price offers on flights a few times although I think they were for flights during the week rather than weekends.

Also, booking well in advance is often cheaper.

The Scillonion is much cheaper and can be a nice journey (usually dolphins, sometimes whales and sea birds) if you have the stomach for it.

This whole 'Scillies are massively super more expensive than the mainland' thing, can't really see where it comes from, maybe we just went to the wrong places. Went in July this year, stayed on 3 islands (camping on two and b&b on St Mary's).

Yes it was relatively expensive to get there and from Falmouth we went via car, train, taxi, minibus, aeroplane, minibus, boat then a walk across St Agnes to the campsite! But even so the pubs and restuarants we went to were pretty standard prices we thought (notable were Turks Head, Hell Bay Hotel (rolled up for a great tasting and priced fish and chip dinner) and Spero's.

Things are a little bit more expensive (but not hugely so) but this was easily made up by the fact there isn't that much else to spend your cash on other than good eating and drinking.

Definitely one of my few favourite places in the world (all of which are in Cornwall). Blessed with 25+degree weather for the time we were there, glorious.

I love the Scilly Isles. I think prev posted might have meant it is expensive to holiday there - not necessarily the price of food - and I agree.

The boat isnt too bad if you have the stomach for it, but hotels and BBs are expensive (and many of them very dated....) We camped both times and I fancy glamping next time, but it is going to be £1300 for two of us....for one week.

Campsite is ok on St Mary's, we did the rent a tent thing second time around, which was £50 a night approx, and worth it not to have to carry all the camping clobber. But the facilities are basic..and not seen much investment since the first time I went seven years ago.

I think a weekend break is a waste though - better to go for five/seven days and island hop and make the most of the cost of the transfers by having a longer holiday.
