possibility of unauthorised card use

Hello. I am on holiday in thailand. I have a halifax clarity mastercard. Today ii went to an IT mall in bangkok to buy electronics, not having enough cash with me i went to the ATM just next to the store within the mall. I withdrew my money but unknowingly either left my card in the slot or dropped it on the floor at the atm. I then purchased my items and went home. 4 hours later i realised i had lost my card ,searched everywhere and then remembering i had it at the store i telephoned them.. they said they had it. I went and collected it. They said it was found at the atm..

so im relieved to have my card back but now im scared unauthorised transactions may have taken place during the 4hours. I have heard stories of people paying by card in this particular mall (pantip plaza) being doubled charged or overcharged etc when paying by credit card. Also i have noticed how when i use this card here, very rarely am i asked for pin, normally they do it with signiture so i am therefore concerned that in those 4 hours it would be easy for someone to buy something , either an employee or the person who discovered it and then handed it in. I can login to my halifax online but transactions take days to appear and cant phone halifax as i dont know my security code and they will only resend via post .if there is an unauthorised transaction will there be anything i can do or do i just lose the money? Any help much appreiciated , stressing so much about this!

Can you not just ring Halifax up and just say you forgot your phone pin? I dont use Halifax but when I ring my bank I nearly always forget my pin and they just go through alternative security questions with me (e.g. DOB/Overdraft Limit/DDs) and then give access over the phone.

Better call them straight away as they might hold it against you if you delay it and the card has been used.

I don't use Halifax myself but do they have a secure messaging service? That's what I used with Nationwide when I discovered while in Vietnam that my card had be cloned before I left the UK and then used in Australia.

You will not be liable for any unauthorised transactions, unless you were negligent.

But I guess Halifax might say you were negligent in not contacting them to alert them in these circumstances.

If you phone Halifax and explain, I suspect they will put a stop on your card transactions, even if you can't pass security.

A relative of mine had her Halifax card stolen in a remote part of South America. She texted me. I phoned Halifax and explained. They stopped the card. I could have been a prankster, but they decided it was safer to take my word, than risk fraudulent transactions going through.

Your risk is not just the four hours. There could be a thousand copies of your card being used with different signatures on the back by now. When signatures are being used all it takes is some easy to get equipment and the card details to make an unlimited number of copies.

Forget not knowing your security code. They will find some other way to authenticate you when you are reporting a card that was out of your control and now quite possibly cloned or otherwise used for fraud.
