Laptop not seeing network

Hi
My old laptop has stopped seeing my network.
It was able to see my wireless connection then stopped and connected to BT WI FON, albeit very poorly and leaving me unable to see the internet.
So I rebooted the router but to no avail. I now have the laptop connected by a network cable to the router but it states that there is no network connection when trying to see the internet.
Other laptops and iPad are fine. Is there anything I can try before I purchase a new laptop. I have no windows disks.
It is a HP Lenovo HSTNN 105c running Xp professional version 2. Appreciate any help. I'm not bothered about any saved files, it's just used for browsing.

Right click on your wireless network icon, View available wireless networks, Change advanced settings, Wireless networks, Highlight your network (SSID), Properties, Connection. Check "Connect when this network is in range". Click OK, Advanced, Make sure "Access Point (Infrastructure) Networks only" is selected, and "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks" is unchecked. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

There's another issue with older laptops, where they're not compatible with old encryption methods and cannot see networks that do.
Most routers are set for auto encryption method and the first device to connect after a restart will set the encryption method to suit. So if you connect an iPad first it'll set to a modern encryption and then any older devices can sometimes be left unable to connect.
Obviously this was not your issue, but its worth adding in case anyone else ever finds this thread.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
