new debit card triggers blocking visa debit

Hi there, I am quite new to the forum and hopeful that I may find the answers I am looking for with my questions?. I am always happy to help others too with their questions.

The problem

I couldn't log into online banking for some 5 days almost a week ago, and soon after receiving a new visa debit card from my bank. I had gone into the bank to make sure that I didn't need to activate the new card and did report the problem to them - they themselves didn't detect any issues in my local branch.

I ended up having to make calls to the online fraud prevention team once five days had passed and still unable to log into my online Barclays account. They claimed that my card wasn't blocked at all, but an error with my online membership account number. Strange stuff because it made no difference if I logged in with my bank card or membership number online.

However, I had tried to make a purchase to pay a handling fee with royal mail just prior to this issue, and my card was readily declined on 28th Nov, and why I know for sure that my card had been blocked. I also had the issue of having an active grocery order with Tesco on 28th Nov, but had genuinely forgotten to update my new visa debit card, and believe that it was paid on the old visa debit.

Somehow my Tesco online grocery order was delivered despite not being able to update the new visa debit card number, but hasn't come off my bank balance. The order was placed on 28th November 2014 - 7 days ago.

This has sort of left me quizzing over how come I have received my grocery order (Tesco are quite prompt at taking the money) from previous experiences with them. I had made at least two complaints to Barclays within the time my online banking was not working, and now worried that I might be charged twice when it does come out of my bank?.

If you didn't update your debit card details with Tesco then it's reasonable to assume the purchase was debited to the current account to which the old card belongs.

It's not clear why you have a second debit card on the same current account.

To check whether the new card is active, I would suggest you withdraw some cash, using the new debit card, at a bank branch or cash machine to see if you get the cash.

Your access to the account online is a separate issue.
