OVo Bill £500 for one month

Hi we moved into our house last year and had to keep the previous owners gas and electricity suppliers for a month before we could arrange changeover to British Gas. Despite asking Ovo for the bill several times and them keep saying they were trying to sort it out, we have just today received an email from them saying we owe them £496 for gas and electric last November - 2013 (I think it was for about five weeks altogether.)

Does anyone know what we can do about this please? This is far far more than it should have been. We live in a 3 bed semi, not a 10 bedroomed mansion

  • Is the bill you have received based on reading you provided? If not how have they calculated your usage costs? Are the dates listed on the bill correct for the dates you moved in and the supply changeover date to your new supplier?

)ne would have hoped that you gave them a meter reading when you moved in and you should have another meter reading from the day you changed suppliers.
These readings should be the same as those on the bill, if they aren't then you should be querying it.

So what are they using as the opening reading?

Are there particularly high usage estimates for only gas or electricity or are they both high?

I would probably advise you to contact OVO with all the readings you have submitted to your new supplier so that they can try and find a pattern of usage since you moved in to the property. Using this they can work out how much you would likely have used in the period they were supplying you, if they were never given the correct readings when you took over responsibility for the supply then they will have estimated. If the previous tenants were not supplying readings often these estimations can be all over the place.
