  • Have been watching this thread carefully as daughter in same position.

New house, needs phone line for broadband, but has been told only way to get phone number is to tie up with BT for 12 months line rental.

Anyway, this morning had phone back from TalkTalk re query earlier about plans and explained what BT had said.

The advisor said " What you do is sign up with BT for 12 months line rental, and when you get phone number you call us and arrange transfer and then cancel BT contract".

"But what about cancellation fees?" I said.

He replied "Because it is a 12 month contract, by law they have to give you a 'cooling off period' to decide if you really want to commit. This cooling off period is for 21 days, so as soon as you get phone number ring Talk Talk and they will do the transfer and there will be no cancellation charges!!"

This really caught me on the hop, so I said "Why has no one else told me this?", to which he replied "You don't expect BT to advertise it do you?"

    Comments please.

PS Sorry about length of this first post, but if you don't ask, you don't get!!

    lmao

They are talking full on !!!!!!!!. Once its conected you are in the contract, the only cooling off period is from between ordering it and it being switched on.

That is my understanding too. But I once got out of a BT contract because it said (in the small print) to accept the contract you just have to start using your phone. So I did not use it - so, no contract! They changed their standard contract terms a little while later!
