I remember years ago you could get one hour free architect time at your house for a donation to charity. Is this still happening? Do architects normally give their first hour free? How can I get free architect time?
All info, web links and advice most welcome.

that was called "Architect in the House" (scottish version was architect in the hoose!)
I think the scottish one continues but the other has stopped I think…
In my experience a first consultation will generally be free of charge anywayThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Thanks. I will look for the first hour consultation as free.“…the ‘insatiability doctrine – we spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to make impressions that don’t last, on people we don’t care about.” Professor Tim Jackson

I'm trying to get advice about a downstairs toilet ie where to put one, we think it will have to be in an extension & need advice about this. When I look online for an architect they all seem to work with big companies, but this is only a small project.0

You need an architectural designer, or a technician, or somebody who draws up house extensions. Such people are frequently one person bands operating from home, sometimes as part time jobs. Looking on the Web is not a good way to locate these folks. You need a Church or Parish Magazine, or a local advertising magazine through your letter box, or the small ads in the local paper, or recommendations from friends or family.0 -
You don't need an architect to tell ypu whete to put a downstairs. A good plu,ber ir builder will assist with that. It will be dictated by access to waste and water, so by default it can only go in certain places.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Hi, we have been wanting a small 5m X 3m extension to the back of our house and sent a drawing to the council and asked if we needed planning permission. We were told no but would need Building regs. This was a few years ago and we don't know what to do next. We are new to the area and don't know any professionals to go to and no one has any recommendations for us. We do however know not to use the architect or builder our neighbours had when they had their extension done as it is awful. My husband is very good at doing things himself and wanted to do as much of it as he could but we don't know what to do re building regs. Can anyone suggest anything please. We live in the Nottinghamshire area.0

Start your own thread to get the most advice, but in the meantime, I'd think that reading this would enlighten you:

Or maybe:

Shelter used to run this as a fundraiser, but it might have ceased, in that the last reference is to the 2103 scheme

But as it seemed to have been going 17+ years that seems odd...

so why not email or ring Shelter?0
