Does a small incorrect spelling of surname really stop you from getting credit?

This is something I don't understand. I was told as long as the date of birth, address and other information is accurate then a typo error of just 1 letter of a surname does not make a difference when applying for a credit card and getting credit checked...Now I keep being told that a error of even 1 letter of a surname can make you a different person, therefore 2 different credit files...One where its my correct name i.e. passport and the other one where it's a different letter of my surname.
I've told my bank the error and they corrected it, but the credit card department say that your passport ID is not going through because of something to do with electoral roll? but then how did I get credit checked for an over-draft? which is the same name that the credit card people have...If I was credit checked for my over-draft then surely I was on the electoral roll right? so how can 1 different lettter of a surname cause so much complications?

I would not think so my surname is double barrelled.
Some lenders have it as John Smith and others have it as John Smith-Jones and its never caused me any issues.
You might want to add the variants of your names as an alias to your credit file. I had to do this so all my credit accounts linked up etc.
Lenders also ask the question "have you been known by any other name" normally I would enter the variant at this point.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
But that's adding a name rather then a typo error right? the only difference is just 1 letter of my surname. When I applied for a credit card I gave the same name that is registered with my flex Nationwide Account! Now when I gave my passport for an ID check they claimed it did not go through as it has something to do with the electoral roll, then how come my flex account over-draft went through? unless they did not check if am on the electoral roll nor did credit checks for my over-draft request?....
So basically even if your name is mispelt through just 1 letter it still classifies as a different person or as something that's not valid?
when orghanisations such as credit card companies check if we are on the electoral roll do they go by name and not date of birth, address etc? maybe that's why they are also asking for proof of address to see if am on electoral roll?0 -

agreed Richard, me too.
& agreed G6JNS..i would certainly be speaking to my bank or card provider to ensure that all spelling was correct.0 -
Electronic check can't match up names where there is an error. So, yes it does affect you getting credit. Make sure that things match or you will always have this problem.
If it didn't matter, lenders might just as well not bother with any checks at all.0 -
There was a one letter discrepancy with my middle name on a mortgage application and it delayed the exchange of contracts!
