The wireless adapter you mention is the exact same model as listed in T4i's post.

I see now, what confused me is the IBM thing!

I'd recommend you use System Restore (assuming you have XP) and create a backup and then go to the site listed in T4i's post and download the driver and install it.

    Ok done that!

If you're using XP and the new driver makes it worse you can roll-back to the old driver (XP has this facility) and/or the option to go back to a previous System Restore point before the driver was installed would bring your system to the same state it is in now (before updating the driver).

I'm sure T4i would agree with me on this?

    Does this make sense?

Yep I think so. The only thing I'm confused about is on the link that T4i posted it says that:
    - This software can only be used with the machines on the supported list on this page. Use of this software with any other machine is strictly prohibited.

My machine's not on there, does that matter or are they just trying to stop people with other machine's stealing the software? :o As you can see I am clueless on the whole issue! If that doesn't matter do I uninstall the current driver and then install the new driver?

    Many thanks!!

It could be the driver has been modified specifically for those machines listed.

    You have several choices:-

    1. Download & Install from Dell's site - I found this on their site.
    2. Download & Install from T4i site as indicated.
    3. Download & Install from Intel's site - I found this on their site.

Personally, I would try direct from Dell's site as thats where your machine is from.

Remember that you have created a system restore point so that you can go back to the point it was at before installing the new driver plus the driver roll-back facility can be used.

    Sorry I can't help you.
Just wanted to say hello to someone like my husband :) he regularly gets the Blue Screen of Death and then spends a fortune on the phone with some computer god sorting it out.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Ok I've just downloaded it, gone for the Dell one as you suggested and everything's working fine. *fingers crossed* the blue screen is a thing of the past! If not then I'll try the drivers from the Intel website, I think it is the wireless adapter drivers where the problem lies but I would never have thought of that without you lot!! thank you and T4i sooooo much for your help it's very very much appreciated!! :T

    Clareo,

Your welcome. Try, for the next few days (depending on how common the blue screens were), not to install anything. It's more on the side of caution as if you don't have any problems for say a week and then next thing is you install something and problems appear again it'll give an idea of what caused it. Where as, if you just installed other software/drivers now you wouldn't know if the problem was because the new driver didn't work or if it was the this other software/driver you installed.

If problems aren't solved remember to use System Restore to restore back to the way the system was before you installed the driver today.

The chances are that T4i realised it was a driver problem by you posting the very informative BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) information - specifically it mentioned the driver at fault, "w22n51.sys". T4i probably did a google search on the driver - so without you including the BSoD information it would have been a lot harder to trace the cause.

    :j

Hope its all ok now. Even though your machine is made by Dell it still uses Intel components..Intel are the people who make the drivers for Dell and IBM. Dell and IBM may call the driver different but its still the same driver to go with the wireless card chipset.

All the drivers you need are available from intels site.

You could try PC Bug Doctor here. I haven't used it, but they advertise free diagnosis, and free solutions. Worth a shot.

Dont pay for this sort of rubbish. Come here and fix it for free! The very kind people at 'PC Bug Doctor' prob use google and searched for the .sys file.

They also charge $39 for the pleasure.

Everything still seems ok, I'm a bit worried about tempting fate here! :D

It's now running the latest intel release of the driver and as of yet there's been no blue screens! I really appreciate your help, I could have spent loads of £ on taking it to a 'professional'.

Thank you once again, you lot on this board do such a great job helping us not so knowledgeable users. I've nominated you here too as I feel your hard work on this board deserves more recognition!

You're total stars all of you! :D

After a week of no BSoD you should be ok. If you can remember (I know its hard I forget sometimes) but use system restore prior to installing hardware or software. Some programmes themselves automatically set restore points anyhow but i'm afraid it's very hard to determine if a certain program will so its best to do it yourself.

They probably would have just done what was suggested by everyone on this thread.

Thank you but T4i did most of the work.

If you've still had no BSOD i'd say its fixed. Lots of people were having the same issue as you and the newer intel driver release has sorted all that. Wireless is still a new technology and even Intel can get it wrong first time.

Glad to hear I could be of some help! Bring on the problems!
