Car Parking Partnership PCN number is invalid. Now What

Dear all,
I received a PCN on my windscreen from Car Parking Partnership on 1/12 at Sainsbury Eltham.
Reason - Overstayed.
When I enter the PCN number onto their payment website or their automated phone line, the response is always 'unable to retrieve amount, please ensure that you have entered the correct number'.
There is obviously something wrong with this PCN.
I went back to Sainsbury again today, hoping to see the Store Manager but the Customer Service says there is nothing they can do and I need to contact Greenwich and the number is on the Carpark sign. Which obviously wasn't and is just a Car Parking Partnership number.
I should have insisted on seeing the store manager but decided to come home and read up more on this website.
I understand that with a PCN on windscreen we should wait for NtK then appeal.
In my situation, I am thinking of emailing Sainsbury to get them to cancel the charge and where the PCN number is not even correct, I am wondering what else I should do to end this case?
Any advice is much appreciated.

God knows why you tried to pay! But if the PCN number is not recognised, perhaps they've already cancelled it?
Regardless, wait until (IF) you get a NtK.0
