Nope, your doing nothing wrong. I am in my 3rd week of Youview via BT, its the biggest mistake of my life. Pause\rewind constantly fails, as does the on demand feature and then there's the occasional random shut down feature.

On every occasion I have tried contacting them they reply with a standard generic reply of rebooting the box, no matter what the issue is, failing that they are prepared to send an engineer to have a look, at a cost of £150.

If you check their online forum you will see its bombarded with unanswered complaints, as it seems they are only too aware there is an issue with these boxes but have a shrug shoulders attitude about it.

I would advise anybody not to even consider getting a Youview box.

I have ended up investing in a freeview smart box which works flawlessly, my Youview box has been dumped in the spare room for now and acts as merely a freeview box without any extra features, as that is all its good for.

    Poo!!!
not the answer i wanted but I suspected that is what I would get. mine freezes all the time on demand and like you say they are not interested. the ONLY thing about it is at least its not costing me more money to run it as the deal saved me a fiver a month from my existing deal!! and i can cancel in 12 months (thank goodness!!) and i will be doing that for sure. :(

    Just to balance the argument.

I have a BT Youview box and it works perfectly, no issues at all.

OP When you say it's taking an age to start how do you turn it off, do you put the box in standby or turn it off at the plug?

If the latter then it will take a while as the box is basically a PC media centre and turning off at the wall means it has to boot up every time while in standby all it does is wake up.

I would also doubt that the on demand problem is the box, it's more likely to be problem with the internet connection that is causing the freezing. Depending on your local infrastructure you may well be getting contention for bandwidth during peak times.

I have BT Infinity and get excellent download speeds but with a popular programs at peak times on iPlayer I still get the odd data freeze.

What internet speed do you have?

I had a Humax Youview box. It had an optional Eco setting that would take an age to reboot as opposed to normal standby.

Maybe the cheap knock offs supplied by TalkTalk have the same options.

Don't know about TalkTalk but the BT boxes are re-badged Humax boxes.

I too have BT Infinity, its definitely not the internet as my NowTV and both computers work efficiently, even during Youview's issues.

Some say its a software issue, others say its the hardware. Whatever it is, Youview are aware of the issue, yet neither BT or Youview will address it to anybody, the forums are lead full of people asking what the issue is, yet none have been given any answers other than a generic reboot it.

The nearest I could guess was its an issue between cabled and non-cabled boxes but as I have paid for the wireless version, I cannot tell if that is the case or not.

    Really odd.

I'm not having any of the issues as described, the only minor issue for me is that the EPG gets slow to respond to key presses over time but a re-boot every couple of months fixes that.

My box is connected via Devolo 500 Powerline adapters although I never had any issues when I was using the BT supplied Comtrend powerline adapters.

  • Thanks for all responses - perhaps a fiddle with it again might do the trick.

I do switch off at the mains because I am not keen on leaving things like that on all night because of the fire risk. Perhaps I just need to organise myself better in the mornings and switch it on before the shower!! LOL :):) Its when I dash in to watch Strictly and miss the first 5 mins that sends me over the edge!! LOL :D

You have your answer, all boxes take significantly longer start up if switched off at the wall.
If you want to save money only use enough water to cover your vegetables when boiling them on the hob, same applies when having a bath.

The Youview boxes are designed to be on 24/7. You should get something like this
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ENERGY-SAVING-POWER-DOWN-PLUG-SOCKET-USES-TV-REMOTE-ELECTRIC-SAVER-ONE-CLICK-OFF-/151071100208
The Youview box plugs into the ALWAYS ON socket, TV to TV socket and everything else to PERIPHERAL socket.
