Ups

Been waiting for a delivery from these guys.

2 nights ago I noticed my item was received by the local depot, which according to the AA is just 3.2 miles away and should take about 6 minutes by road (but there are some roadworks on the route suggested which I don't think the AA took in account)

Anyway, yesterday at about 6.30am my item was supposed to be out on the local delivery van to be delivered.

Come about 6.30pm, the records were changed, an 'exception' (whatever that is) was logged and it said delivery would now be delayed by 1 business day.

So today, according to UPS, it's been out on the delivery van since about 3am.

But according to their website, they don't even start delivering to addresses until 9am! Why is the van leaving so early? Where is my item being taken?
Presumably explains why they are having 'exceptions' - driver is probably out of hours before he is allowed to deliver it.

Of course, it's still not here either.

Doubt the driver will l be driving directly to your address (unless you're the first delivery) could have any number of drops before yours.

Perhaps 3am is the time it was loaded (reloaded) onto the van by the night shift, ready for the driver when (at whatever time) he starts?

I appreciate that the van may not come directly to me, but the item is/was at my local depot. I can only go on the tracking info it gives me. It said
    Out for Delivery
    But it's changed again

Another exception. Found out what it means now:
    Exception
Your shipment is currently within the UPS Network; however an unforeseen event has occurred which could result in a change to the scheduled delivery date
View Shipment Progress for specific details

    Tracking page now says:
    Scheduled delivery
Scheduled delivery information is not available at this time. Please check back later.

Under Shipment Progess, another entry at 7pm today again saying:
Delivery will be delayed by one business day

ETA: Says the item is at my local depot, but not sure if that was at 3am or 7pm , as that entry only has the date.
Probably 3am as it says 'last location', and 3am entry has changed from 'Out for Delivery' to 'Destination Scan'. There's no indication of where the item currently is, or even if it was scanned at 7pm.

This is what they also claim:

    UPS Standard

    Delivery Commitment
Scheduled day-definite delivery to and from every address in the country depending on origin and destination

    Service Area Destinations and Origins:
    Throughout the country

    Benefits
An ideal choice when speed needs to be balanced with economy
Day-definite delivery lets you plan ahead

Well I had planned ahead. What I hadn't planned for was their repeated failure to deliver on the day they scheduled.

The 3am is the time it is loaded onto the delivery van ready for the drive to start his shift. I once drove to a depot 10 miles away because an item was delayed. It was a pram and we were quite desperate for it otherwise I would of just waited patiently, unavoidable things occur!....maybe they will let you collect if you need the item urgent?
  • I did call them earlier today and ask if I could collect the item from them

They said of course I could, if they had the item. They are open 8am -7pm
Problem is that the item is 'out for delivery' during all that time - so it's on a van somewhere, not at the depot.

They said they cannot prevent the item going on the van unless I have a failed delivery card which I can use to change the future delivery options.

Otherwise they will keep trying until 3 failed deliveries, and then retain the item for 5 days to allow me to collect it, after which it will be returned to sender.

My problem is I don't have a failed delivery card as they have not attempted to deliver it yet - just taken it on a couple of days joy-ride :(

Probably too late to stop the same happening today, but if you contact the sender, they should be able to change the delivery option prior to the first failed delivery :)

So that should stop it going out on the van in future ... unless of course there is another 'unforeseen event' that results in someone sticking it in the van anyway.

Be very careful if you change the delivery to Collect From Depot. UPS will print out a label to stick on the parcel that self collection is requested. However 9 times out of 10 they will leave the parcel on the van. When I visited after work there were loads of customers waiting for the driver to finish his rounds and return back to the depot.

If the driver personally comes into the waiting room with your parcel(s) then you will get them. If the agent appears at the window then your parcel has probably been lost/stolen/untraceable. The fatal words will be to "contact our customer service centre".

Well been out most of the day, and I was fully expecting as Murphy's Law would have it, that there would be a missed delivery card waiting for me.

    Nope!

Item's been out on the delivery van since 4am today and not a sniff of him.

    Website currently says:
    Scheduled Delivery Updated To:
    Friday, 05/12/2014

Since their delivery cut off time is 7pm, does anyone else foresee another unforseen event having occured today?
  • Guess what everyone?

Yes, another unforeseen event happened today. You'd have thought with such regularity UPS would have foreseen such unforeseen events occuring

    Website now says:
    Scheduled Delivery:
Scheduled delivery information is not available at this time. Please check back later.
  • No change on the website this morning, so I was going to try my luck at the local depot.

I was just printing off the webpage when there is a knock at the door with the guy from UPS

I didn't think they delivered on Saturday, and their webpage says they don't deliver before 9am whenever they do deliver

Oh well, at least it's here now. Just have to see if it's still in 1 piece.
