Undelivered Goods / Debt Collectors

Not sure if I am putting this on the right board, but my mum tried buying some waterfall cardigans from one of those magazines that you get in the Sunday papers.

Nothing arrived, but the company started ringing my mum demanding payment. My mum explained that she hadn't received anything and during the conversation, it turned out that they delivered the package to the wrong address (5 door up, 48 instead of 38).

The company want my mum to send proof of address even though she put her right address down in the first place.

Now debt collectors are ringing my mum (I assume they are also sending letters, but these will presumably go to 5 doors up).

I have advised her to ignore the calls and not be worried about anything. She explained the situation to the debt company (not sure what their response was).

Can this affect her credit file or is the people 5 doors up who I have guessed have received the cardigans and kept them? She doesn't want to go to the neighbours as it is not a nice area.

Any credit file impact will affect your mum. She may want to check her files.
  • They would need to take her to court to impact her credit file. Quite unlikely, but possible.

Trouble is, any court papers would go 5 doors up.

I would send them proof of address, in writing, then tell them you are not laying for their mistake and if they continue to ask for payment they will be reported to trading standards.

I thought it was down to the address. But if I am wrong, I shall tell her.

Proof of address is something like a utility bill, is this right?

I just don't see why she should go the effort (and expense) of proving where she lives when they could just look at the electoral roll.

No. Credit is based on people, not addresses.

I agree, but a stamp is a small price to pay and much easier to sort now than trying to get a CCJ set aside (worst case).

Ask for your postage costs back also. Probably won't mind.

    Utility bill will be fine.

I would just send the proof of address and be done with it once they can confirm the delivery was to an incorrect address they will sort the matter for them easily.

I'm hazarding a guess your talking about JD Williams & Co here, if you speak to the Account Investigations team on 0161 386 2285 they will be able to help you.

It's not just a case of looking at the electoral register they would need permission from them to view their credit file to see the electoral informaion.
