Cancelled Train

My train ticket was from Euston to Manchester but this train was cancelled and i got on an earlier train that took me to Wigan. Tickets were not checked at any stage of the journey. My final destination was actually somewhere in between Manchester and Wigan so going to Wigan was actually less of a problem than if i'd caught the train to Manchester.

Does anyone think i'm entitled to make a claim for the specified train being cancelled?

But you did choose to travel. I don't see how you are owed a refund - maybe something for inconvenience, morally speaking, but I don't think a claim along those lines is likely to get you anywhere.

Yep, sounds like you effectively used your ticket to travel on a different service to a different destination, but the ticket has nonetheless been used, so you can't get a refund.

Unless you actually bought a second ticket to travel to Wigan, in which case you could claim a refund for your Manchester ticket.
  • I never mentioned 'refund', i suppose it's more of an inconvenience issue really.

  • You might want to look in the Virgin Trains Passenger Charter - http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/assets/pdf/global/passengers-charter.pdf

Since you got an earlier train, I don't think you're entitled to anything

Just noticed that if your train is running 30 minutes late they are meant to give you free soft-drinks!

"If you have already joined our train and it is delayed for more than
30 minutes we will provide complimentary non-alcoholic drinks until
stocks are exhausted, and keep you informed of developments"

I'm catching the last Euston->Wigan train of the day next week and I'm always scared it will get cancelled

Did you suffer any inconvenience? If you reached your final destination at least an hour later than you would have done if your original train had run on time then you might be entitled to something.
  • Imagine the scenario the other way around. I turn up late for my train and the only other train i can get is to a place approx. 30 miles away.
I'm sure i'd have to pay a premium price for the ticket and still have to make my way using other means to my final destination.
    Thanks for any help

  • If it is, they might have another one running to Manchester you could catch.

What inconvenience to you was there? It sounds like you were actually "convenienced" so perhaps you should offer them more money for your journey?
  • Had to make new arrangements at destination and people there had to change their plans.
