A selection of palm oil free products:

Biscuits (sweet):

McVities Rich Tea
McVities Hobnobs (plain)

Crackers (savoury):

Has anyone found some good biscuits (both the sweet and the savoury kind) that are palm oil free? And not in the finest/priciest range? I've only found all butter shortbreads lately.
Anyone recommend?
Thanks.

Hi. Thought I'd hijack this thread and get it going as I have similar questions - though more broad ranging than just biscuits.

I've been eating palm oil free and have found it really difficult - as it seems there are thousands and thousands of products that are loaded with the nasty ingredient (ever tried to buy palm oil free bread? - nightmare).

This got me thinking about Christmas time - so I was going to ask if there are any other healthy (lol, seems funny bearing in mind I'm talking about desserts) people out there that can recommend products that are palm oil free. especially Christmas goodies - Mince Pies, Stollen, Chocolate log, Cakes, Biscuits etc.

Maybe we could use this thread to make a list of products and where to buy them from.

I'll start: Tesco Finest Mince Pies (palm oil free).

If I find some biscuits I'll let you know. Currently waiting to hear from several manufacturers.

It's not as easy as it seems as lots of companies are very sneaky and they simply state "Vegetable Oil" on their products when in fact it can be all or at least part palm oil.

Thanks everyone. Let's stick together and fight against this nasty saturated fat as well as help out nature at the same time.
  • Okay, it depends what you mean by 'good biscuits'. generally the more stuff they have in them (fillings, creams etc.) the more likely they are to have palm oil in them. But I found a couple.

    Palm oil free biscuits:

    McVitie Rich Tea Biscuits (plain)
    McVitie Hob Nobs (plain)

Sorry for delay in replying, I don't come on here daily.
I think it would be a great idea to have a Palm Free products thread. I'm wondering if I could put a list of things in my initial post as products are found? Not sure if this is allowed on the forum, but I have done a test on the first post.

The more you look at ingredients which I've always done, the more you realise how many recipes have changed to incorporate palm oil. I noticed it has crept into a lot of vegetarian foods.

I really want to eliminate it from my diet as much as possible. The store bought bread is a problem as you say, but luckily I bake all my own bread. For those Xmas treats you mention, I think bake your own is the best way to go - pain in the backside if you're not into cooking though!. I try and make everything from scratch if I can so I know the ingredients. But everyone, including me, has storecupboard stuff and I generally have an emergengy store bought cut loaf in the freezer. So there is a compromise here and there, like everything else.

Thanks for those biscuit suggestions. Yes, I'd found those two, good job I like both! Apart from those though there is nothing in the everyday sort that I've found. I've not found any savoury biscuit without PO, not that I have had a thorough look yet.
Also having trouble finding flour tortillas.

    Thanks.

I've had to stop buying peanut butter because Tesco changed their recipe and now put palm oil in their Value brand. I can't afford to pay the higher prices for the ones without it, so I have started making my own.

I've been studying the ingredients in spreads, most have palm oil in them, so I've changed to Lurpack spreadable, but using less of it. Bliddy palm oil is everywhere.

I'd say it's quite likely that they have always put palm oil in their value brand - it's just that since the 'new laws' they aren't allowed to simply state 'vegetable oil' as an ingredient and must state which type or combination of types of oil it actually is.

It's been a while as I haven't logged in for a while. But just to update with a bit of a strange one; The last McVities Hobnobs that I bought actually state 'palm oil' as an ingredient on the actual packet, even though I was previously told that they use Sunflower. Sunflower oil is also wrongly listed on the ingredients list for this product on supermarket sites (such as Tesco - who I did inform - to no avail). I don't know if there is any legal issue here? I'm also still awaiting further comment from McVities.

Anyway, "Go Ahead crispy slices (all flavours)" are Palm Oil free - *note - Only the CRISPY SLICES - the other products contain palm oil *

Seems impossible to find soft flour tortillas without palm oil.

I use the "lebanese flatbread" (Dina) style things instead. You should be able to find these or something similar in the supermarket. I've bought them in both Morrisons and Asda:

  • I'd like to bump this thread as I' d like to start a vegan and palm oil free diet (already vegetarian); but most vegan food has it in.
Morrisons sliced bread doesn't contain it. The one that's 59p or two for a £1. Most products saying no hydrogenated fat will contain palm oil.

Barny sponge bears don't contain it. Finding it very hard to find packed lunch bits for the kids that don't contain it.

Anybody any updates? I came across a site the other day which I bookmarked, which if I come across it, I will return to post the name.

It's crazy how many products have it in! I saw it on Food Unwrapped and have decided to try and keep an eye out for it. I used to love Ritz but there's palm oil in them and the supermarket alternatives.

Crackerbread by Ryvita doesn't have palm oil in.

I've done some research, apparently these don't have palm oil in according to the website linked below, but you may want to check the packet yourself:

I believe Iceland have banned palm oil from all their own label products. Not sure if that's for new product launches or whether it's coming out of existing products too.
