Scottish Power taking the mick

I have been with SP since January 2012, and generally been happy with their fixed tariffs for my dual fuel bills. However, having notification from MSE that I could save over £100 per annum by swapping to the Co-op, I am certainly glad I did swap. SP have just advised me to change my monthly DD from £137 per month to £187 (!!) per month from Jan 1, as they put it "We’ve found that your current payments are too low to cover your energy use so we need to increase them." Well, by downloading my 12 month gas/electricity consumption from my own SP account calculated from my monthly meter reading - this totals £1.439.09, set against my DD total of £1,754 for the same period. Am I glad I'm in the process of swapping to the Co-op before the January DD will be taken. But, more worryingly, how on earth can SP justify the increase in my payments when clearly they are not necessary. SP users beware!!!!! And thank you MSE for your sound advice to swap.

Make sure you don't cancel the Scottish Power direct debit as they might charge your final bill at their standard tariff.
  • We had the mildest winter on record last year. You can t base your average consumption on what you used in the last 12 months. The winter before was more representative of a normal UK winter, very cold. Scottish Power will be using figures based on an average of a few winters not just one freak one
  • I hope my increased DD from SP will not be taken (on January 1st) as the Co-op have advised that the transfer date is December 19. Still, on advice, I will not cancel my DD until told otherwise to.
