Signed and Stamped Bank Statement?

Hi all, bit of a problem.

Years ago I opened a share dealing account and in the meantime have changed my bank account details.

Just sold some shares but cannot withdraw the proceeds as the bank details are wrong, oh ok can I update them please? Yes if you send us a stamped bank statement signed by your branch's manager.

Pop to local bank branch, no sorry sir we don't do a signed bank statement and have never heard of such. So they have given me a stamped mini-statement which according to them is the usual request.

Share dealing service say, no we cannot change your bank account details with just a stamped statement, sorry, goodbye.

Any ideas? Who's in the wrong?

Currently got the lump sum I want to pay off my mortgage before end of this year sat in a share dealing account and unable to access it!

  • So share dealing service is asking for https://www.gov.uk/certifying-a-document

Do you have anything in writing from the share dealing service to show exactly what they want to, if so take that letter with you to the bank with a copy of your bank statement.

I have to say this is rather odd!

Don't most (if not all) of these share dealing services require you to set up a designated account?

Given that people must quite often close a bank account /open additional bank accounts, it must be quite common for people to wish to change their designated bank account?

Is what is actually required proof of your identity? Have you changed your address since opening the share dealing account?

If you were permitted to sell the investment, presumably they are satisfied as to your identity?
  • Thanks all.

Hadn't thought of the sharedealing company's requirement being a certified document, so my bank (Santander) are in the wrong.

Thanks for the URL, I'll print it off tomorrow and pay them another visit. Hopefully get something I can then use to setup my new account and get the money in time.

    Cheers.

How are the bank wrong? Most banks stopped signing documents years ago, one I used to work for would only sign documents if being used and sent internally; that is not issued back to the customer.
