EON - I cant work out why my bill is so high!!

Options
Hi All

I really need some advice :( I have Economy 10 with Eon and im paying £70 per month via direct debit - this would be fine and I understand that that is a reasonable amount for energy but I really cant understand why its that much! I live alone in a bungalow - this winter I still havnt put the heating on as it bumps my bill up! - I only have my front room heater on and my bedroom heater - even then they are storage heaters and don't kick out much heat at all! My house is getting damp and im paying £71 pound a month for nothing!! Ive tried comparing other energy companies but one of the plans im on wont even come up as a tariff when comparing - I really don't know what else to do

Thanks

  • Are you at home all day? £840 a year really isn't that much, OFGEM reckon the average paid is around the £1300 mark.
  • No I work full time - on shifts but its 6 full days a week - sometimes over a weekend so not at home a lot at all to be honest. And as im on my own I probably do 2 loads of washing a week and use the oven in the evenings. I just wish that I could have all of my heaters on so that my house is in some way warm :(

Berleena, are you sure you are using your storage heaters properly?

Not to question your intelligence, but often people use them incorrectly as they don't understand the technology.

Are you closing the (output) damper up at night (and when you are not home), and do you have your input set high enough?

Hi Berleena14 and welcome to the Forums. Thought it might help if I give you a bit of information about your particular meter. I might go on a bit so I'd make a brew if I were you.

Economy 10 meters are mainly designed for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in every 24 hours for heating/hot water purposes. This is split into three periods at night, in the afternoon and during the evening.

Within these 10 hours, there'll be a number of hours where all electricity is charged at the cheaper rates.

To work, the meter will be wired into the heating/water heating circuits at the property. This lets the meter turn the storage heaters on when the off peak periods start and off again at the end.

A frequent complaint with storage heaters is a tendency to leak heat and to cool down too early. Economy 10 is meant to 'top up' the stored heat so properties stay warmer throughout the day.

The times the off peak periods are active depends on the region and the make of meter. We'll be happy to tell you these times if you contact us. Alternatively, drop an email to the address in my Profile if you prefer. I'll let you know.

With Economy 10, we've only the one tariff available. As mackemps3 says, by changing the meter, you'll have access to more tariffs both with us and with the other suppliers.

Before changing the meter, I always recommend that customers ask a qualified electrician to check their set up first. This is because of the way Economy 10 meters are wired into the household circuits. Changing the meter might affect the heating/hot water and some remedial work may be needed before the meter exchange can go ahead.

We're currently charging £51.06 to change a meter. The cost of the electrician would also be down to you.

Have a look to see if the meter can be used more cost effectively. Find out when the cheaper rates are active for all usage. Try to use as much electricity as possible during this period. I know these hours may not be at very sociable times but see if you can use timers on appliances like washing machines, tumble dryers etc.

There's more information on our website about ways to save money be saving energy. Have a look at the Saving Energy Toolkit. Might give you a few tips.

Are we charging to actual meter readings or estimates? If bills have been estimated, please let us have actual readings. We'll be happy to re-bill your account accurately and re-assess your monthly payments.

Sorry to go on a bit here Berleena14 but hope it's of interest. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

That's the basic jist of it.

Once you input is set high enough it shouldn't need to change unless the temperature gets warmer outside. You shouldn't *need* to open the damper at all in the best set conditions. The heater will release just enough to get your walls all warmed up and the room nice and toasty. The damper is like an emergency boost, just use it if you need it. If you are using it a lot and your heaters are running out of heat, then your input is not set high enough.

Feel free to ask if you need more help.
