I'm just looking for a rough idea.

I think I need an oil pump replacement for my Astra G, it might just be an oil change (which I'm hoping it is) but I just want a ballpark figure. Its booked in for Monday but as they're not sure of the problem until they check it, they won't quote me anything.

EDIT: Theres a sound like the ticking of a watch when I drive slowly with my foot barely on the accelerator which makes me think oil pump, but could this also be timing belt?

Or it could be a watch slipped under the seat. ;)

Do failing oil pumps tick?. Does it make this sound when stationary?.

The sound stops when I'm stationary.
The car does blow and jolt when stationary though which makes me then think timing belt....
The exhaust has been checked out.
  • When did you last change the oil & filter?
What mileage has the car done?
When did you last change the spark plugs?
Does the oil pressure light flicker or come on when the engine is up to full temperature and is idling?
Does you car use any oil - how often do you have to top up?
Does the oil warning light come on if you stall the car - or when you start the car - just checking it is working fine!

Does it make that sound if you sitting stationary and just holding a very slight rev on the engine, about 2k rpm?

Oil pump failure is generally indicated by low oil pressure or a noisy engine. Some cars are noisy with low oil. Have you checked the level.

    Exhaust perhaps.
  • I've heard many Vauxhall engines become noisey due to lack of maintenance. The problem usually is the hydraulic lifters become gunked up and fail. Low oil pressure is caused by excessive clearences in the engine bearings but also could be failing pump. Low oil pressure light would usually be on if below spec. Get an oil pressure test done to be certain.

Not sure how you've come to oil pump but no wonder they won't quote as it could be one of sooo many things
  • I cannot stress how important oil changes are. It's probably the cheapest and easiest preventative maintenance anyone can do for their vehicle.

Over in they states they are quite obsessive with oil changes, with some people recommending to change every 3k miles or 3 months, whichever comes first and IMO this is an overkill.

Over here in the UK I don't think people understand the importance of regular oil changes. I've spoken to so many people who think an MOT is a service! Often, their cars don't get an oil change unless the oil light comes on
